Waste Turns Into An Opportunity With Kohler

Dust. Powder. Scraps. What if waste, bound for the landfill, has hidden value we haven’t explored? At Kohler Africa/Nigeria, we tapped into the unexpected virtue of waste and crafted a stunning lab to explore its endless possibilities. The WasteLAB is where we ask “What if?” and experiment until we find answers that lend a deeper meaning to waste, turning it into something functional and useful.

At the KOHLER WasteLAB, we are constantly seeking ways to have a different take on the world around us. For us, nature is a model for sustainable processes. Within nature’s cycles of growth and decay, waste simply doesn’t exist. We work delicately towards one single aim of turning waste into utility. Our work in the WasteLAB applies the systems and processes we often observe in nature to our manufacturing process.

Our relentless research and experimentation have empowered us to look beyond the obvious and explore deeper.

This exploration not only excites us to discover more, but it also enables us to take a giant leap towards building a sustainable circular economy, an economy that’s rooted in the noble idea of preservation. An economy in which we reuse, rethink, and repurposed our waste streams to create beautiful, thoughtful, and artistically rich products.

We recently introduced the first of these products, the Crackle Collection, in partnership with Ann Sacks.

The Crackle Collection tiles are handcrafted by WasteLAB artisans and decorated with a dimensional visual effect. This ingenious effect is achieved with a superlative glaze designed to pool and break over the textured surface while firing.

Keeping the contemporary bold color trends in mind, the Crackle Collection features the premium shades of Mahogany, Amber, Emerald, Bone, Turquoise, and Lake.

The inventive WasteLAB is just one out of innumerable success stories to come out of Kohler’s innovation startup; Innovation for Good (IfG), the second of our three social impact areas–Stewardship, Innovation for Good, and Sustainability. On our stride towards the goal, we aim to explore new methods, new waste streams, and the potential for so much more. We’ve barely begun to imagine the possibilities.
